Department of Horticulture and Landscape Planning


Horticulture can be defined as one of the agriculture departments that is concerned with the intensive cultivation of plants for direct uses by humans as food, medicinal purposes, or as a source of beauty. traditionally, the Iraqis, especially the Babylonians and Assyrians, have been greatly interested in this type of plant, and this interest continues to the present as a result of its importance, and its nutritional value. Horticulture includes Olericulture, Pomology, Ornamental Science, Floriculture and landscape gardening, and Medical and Aromatic plants. In addition, Horticulture includes tissue culture techniques and preserving and storing horticultural crops pre-post-harvest Technique. The department has made great efforts since it was established to complete its scientific base, such as classrooms, laboratories, laboratory types of equipment, and agricultural fields. In addition, to providing and preparing an efficient scientific cadre of University lecturers and their assistants. All of this was to create a firm academic scientific atmosphere equivalent to the horizons sought by Al-Qassim Green University.


Vision and Mission of the department

Recently, Horticultural methods have developed greatly, especially at the academic level, horticulture departments have become a part of many universities in the world. Furthermore, at the technical level, expansion has increased with the establishment of plastic-glass greenhouses, shade houses, and refrigerated fruit and vegetable stores. Methods have been adopted to increase production and improve quality in plants through tissue culture techniques, horticultural plant breeding, and other agriculture techniques and Covered desert agriculture, which provided the local market with horticultural products outside the traditional season and with good varieties. The department created units, namely the palm research unit and the medicinal plants unit, which organize the oyster mushroom project and the project for cultivation and propagation of medicinal plants. Heading the department seeks to truly contribute to serving the community in Babylon and Iraq in general by teaching students the basic sciences and ethics of scientific research that students need through the various sciences related to agriculture aspects, developing agricultural skills in different fields, and enhancing the capabilities of graduates according to international standards to meet the market requirements.

Department Goals

1- Preparing a generation of youths specialized in horticultural fields by a word them a bachelor’s degree in agricultural/horticultural sciences.
2- Preparing agricultural scientific cadres that have academic and research specialization who can effectively contribute to the evaluation and development of agriculture or in the field of developing higher education and scientific research through granting a master’s degree in horticultural sciences.
3- Participation in scientific seminars and conferences, in addition to the participation of department lecturers in various agricultural activities that are held by the Ministry of Agriculture.
4- Developing the agricultural reality in the horticultural aspects towards a better future through implementing research plans carried out by the department’s staff in the department’s fields or the fields of the private agricultural sector.
5- Providing consultations and cooperation with individuals and agricultural companies that are public and private sectors, in addition to holding training courses, includes employees of the Ministry of Agriculture or farmers.
6- Creating a spirit of cooperation and joint work with the relevant agriculture departments, and other departments that have relationships with the Ministries of Agriculture and Science and Technology sector by developing joint research plans and implementing them to develop the agricultural reality.
